Here are the rules for creating a character at Anarchy LRP. Once you have created your character, please email it to moc.oohay|prlyhcrana#moc.oohay|prlyhcrana.

Character generation is a 5 step process. Some people like to think of a name and a character background before they start, others leave it to the end. It’s entirely up to you.

1. Choose your Social Class
2. Buy your Advantages and Disadvantages
3. Work out your Wealth and Belongings
4. Establish your Allegiances
5. Final touches

Social Class

All characters in Anarchy LRP belonging to one of three social classes:

Those who Fight and Rule

This is the gentry and noble classes. It covers everyone from minor knights through to the Queen of the English. Medieval theorists tended to call it just ‘those who fight’, but in truth this class includes the wives and children of warriors who were not expected to fight, and of course some people may have been knights but with little aptitude or interest in combat.

Those who Pray

This is members of the Catholic Church. It includes nuns, monks, priests, bishops, abbesses, canons, and all the rest of the hierarchy of the Church.

Those who Work

To put it bluntly, this is everyone else. It includes peasants in the field, artisans, merchants and the like, and their spouses. Unlike the rulers, women and children from this class often do work, and in fact can be business owners in their own right (and relatively often are). The class also includes the unfree – slaves and serfs, although there are relatively few of the former by the 12th century. Your class has some effect in character generation in determining what Advantages or Disadvantages you may or may not buy, but it’s primary influence is a roleplaying one. Advantages and Disadvantages

Characters have five points to spend at this stage. Advantages cost points, Disadvantages give you them back. You may not get more than two points back from Disadvantages. Many Advantages and Disadvantages have pre-requisites, notably your Social Class. Keep an eye on those!

Some Advantages represent sources of Wealth; each such Advantage bought increases your Wealth by 1, so keep track of how many of these you buy for the next step.

Wealth and Belongings

After you’ve bought your Advantages and Disadvantages, total up the Wealth they give you. You can have any number of items you like, but the sort of item you can have is restricted by your total wealth.

0: Clothing, food, simple tools, daggers and knives.
1: Bows, spears, one handed melee weapons other than swords, shields, padded helmets.
2: Swords, crossbows, padded armour and steel helmets.
3: Maille armour, a horse, fine clothing.
4+: You can basically outfit yourself as you wish, and might be able to bring a spare suit of maille or similar for others or yourself.

Establish your Allegiances

Feudal society is a pyramid of allegiances; only monarchs and Popes can really claim to have nobody they are loyal to (unless they are themselves rebels or schismatics). Indicate who your immediate liege is when submitting your character.

Final Touches

Last of all, we need to know the following:

  • Your name.
  • If you are married (and to whom).
  • If you have any children (and their ages).
  • Any other background points you’d like us to know about.
